The Benefits Of Birthing Balls

It wasn't until after the birth of my daughter that I began hearing about this neat little contraption called a birthing ball. Immediately I was intrigued, and a little jealous. After all, I had gone through a difficult labor, and from what I was hearing, a birthing ball would have made my labor a little easier to bear. As strange as the concept might sound, birthing balls are increasing in popularity.

A birthing ball, which is approximately 25-65 inches around, is an inflatable ball made of rubber. They are large enough for a pregnant woman to sit or squat on. These balls were originally used for many physical therapy patients. Since then, they have gained popularity among pregnant mothers.

When a woman is experiencing back labor, many doctors will suggest that she try rocking in a rocking chair to help ease the discomfort. Birthing balls can be used for this particular method as well. Most women have found that the use of a birthing ball for the rocking method actually helped to alleviate their discomfort better than a rocking chair. The birthing ball can also be bounced gently, which can help in easing labor discomforts.

One of the many wonderful aspects of the birthing ball is that they can play an essential role in helping laboring mothers get into a comfortable position for birthing. Sitting upright on the ball can actually help the baby descend through the birthing canal by using the advantage of gravity. There are many other positions, such as squatting and kneeling that can be used with the birthing ball.

Birthing balls can play a key role in helping speed up the laboring process. It is important though that safety measures be taken. If you choose to use the birthing ball, be sure to have someone "spot" you to ensure that you do not slip or fall off of the ball. Become acquainted with the birthing ball and its many uses before attempting to use it in the labor and delivery room. Also, it is important to inform your doctor and hospital that you wish to use the birthing ball. Some hospitals may prohibit the use of one for insurance reasons.

Birthing balls are a wonderful option for any pregnant mother to consider. Check your area to see if any of your childbirth classes offer a class or further information on the use of these wonderful laboring aids.
